Paul McCann is a Marrithiyel man, Darwin-born, a traditional landowner connected to his Country, Daly, located 350km southwest of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Growing up, Paul was exposed to art from a very young age, watching his father, uncles and aunties create paintings, woodcarvings and didgeridoos. Paul has been painting seriously for the past six years with much of his artwork depicting the landscapes of his traditional land Daly.
Deciding not to follow in the style of his father and family, Paul set out on his own journey of creative self-discovery, forgoing any formal art training in favor of exploring his own creative style and instincts.
Paul now explores wearable art in the forms of textiles and jewelry design with a new passion for Gumnut Bling. Paul hand collects all gumnuts and starts the process of hand painting and drilling each nut then hand makes each individual tassel with the final outcome of stringing the gumnuts together and or by adding earing hooks.
Paul now resides in Melbourne where he continues to create new bodies of work with his unique contemporary abstract style, incorporating links to his family traditions yet allowing him to transform the work in a modern and new direction.
