Kieren Karritpul is a Daly River artist who works variously with painting, printing making and drawing working on various surfaces including canvas, fabric, paper and more recently clay.
Kieren draws inspiration for his art from his culture and the landscape around him. Both figuratively and conceptually he interprets traditional knowledge and culture from his daily routines which revolves around making art, working at Merrepen Arts and on most days in the late afternoon hunting or fishing for his dinner.
Kieren has been painting and drawing since he was 5 years old and already his work has been collected both nationally and internationally. In 2014 he won the inaugural youth award in the National Telstra Art Awards for Indigenous Artists and this year his fabric titled Basketwill feature on the cover of the catalogue for theexhibition Aboriginal Screen Printed textiles from Australia's Top End exhibitionat the Fowler Museum at the University of California in Los Angeles. He also has three fabric lengths in that exhibition that are also now part of the Fowler Collection.
In this new exhibition at Aboriginal Bush Traders in Darwin Kieren Karritpul. Works on Paper 2020 he has worked primarily with lino block printing and painting onto various papers. He explores his culture and the landscape in small intimate, one-off works on paper. Each work is signed and is an edition of 1.
