Bevan Tjampitjinpa Shares the Story Behind His Desert Dot Painting

Visitors to Aboriginal Bush Traders in Darwin recently had the opportunity to meet respected Anmatjere artist Bevan Tjampitjinpa as he spoke about one of his striking desert dot paintings, "Men with Spears and Boomerangs Hunting Perentie, Kangaroo and Emu in Spinifex Country."

Filmed inside our Darwin store, the video offers a rare chance to hear directly from the artist about the meaning behind his work and the stories carried within the canvas.

Born in Darwin and raised between the city and his traditional homeland around Ti Tree in Central Australia, Bevan spent many years living with Elders on Anmatjere Country. During this time he learned traditional law, ceremony, language, bush survival skills and the hunting practices that continue to inspire his artwork today.

In this painting, Bevan depicts men travelling through spinifex country carrying spears and boomerangs as they hunt perentie, kangaroo and emu. The work reflects knowledge passed down through generations, showing how families moved across the desert landscape, reading tracks, locating water sources and gathering food for the community.

The intricate dot work and traditional symbols represent more than a physical landscape. They tell a story of connection to Country, cultural knowledge and the continuing relationship between people, animals and the land. The hunting scenes portrayed in Bevan’s paintings are based on lived experience and teachings from Elders, providing an authentic glimpse into everyday life in the Central Australian desert.

Bevan is known for his detailed desert dot paintings that capture hunting stories, waterholes, bush animals and the movement of people across Country. His work combines traditional techniques with personal experiences, creating artworks that are both culturally significant and visually captivating.

At Aboriginal Bush Traders, we are proud to support artists such as Bevan and provide opportunities for visitors to hear directly from Aboriginal artists about their culture, stories and creative practice.

Watch the video to hear Bevan explain the painting in his own words and gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge, tradition and connection to Country that inspire his art.
