Braving the Road: Bruce and Patrick Bring Solwada to Life

Bruce Wilfred and Patrick Ngalmi made the long journey in from Ngukurr, travelling hundreds of kilometres across remote country to bring their exhibition Solwada (Saltwater) to life. The trip was far from easy. Rough, unsealed roads, shifting conditions, and even vehicle breakdowns along the way meant the journey took patience, resilience, and determination. It’s a reminder of the distances many artists travel—not just geographically, but logistically—to share their work beyond their communities.

Despite the challenges, both artists arrived with warmth and generosity, ready to install the exhibition and connect with visitors. Seeing the works come together in the gallery space was something special. Their paintings carry a vibrant, colourful palette—rich blues, layered ochres, and striking tonal contrasts—that reflect the movement, depth, and cultural significance of saltwater Country. Each piece feels alive with story, grounded in place yet resonating far beyond it.

One of the highlights of their visit was the opportunity to hear directly from Bruce and Patrick about the stories behind the works. These conversations offered a deeper understanding of their practice—the connections to Country, the memories embedded in each composition, and the meaning behind their use of colour and form. It’s insight that can’t be replicated, and it brought an added richness to experiencing the exhibition.

We’re proud to share Solwada (Saltwater) in our new gallery space. You can visit us at Shops 4–5, Smith Street Mall, or explore the exhibition online.
