Wayne Pellagreen | Aboriginal Bush Traders Indigenous Artist Profile
Wayne Pellagreen | Palawa Artist | Ironwood Clapsticks
I am a Palawa/Pakana (Aboriginal) man of Lutruwita (Tasmania). I am a confident communicator, and throughout my 30-year career as a tour guide, I have always enjoyed extremely positive feedback from the guests who join the tours I lead. I greatly enjoy introducing people to the places I feel a strong connection to, and sharing stories about the places we visit. As a feature of my Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks tours, I introduced my guests to painting with ochres and sticks, including demonstrating ochre painting - how it is made and how it is applied. I first started on canvas in 2018, when I was feeling a strong connection with Lutruwita (Tasmania), having returned there as part of my healing and journey researching my family history and heritage. All of my emotions were coming out onto my canvases, and this was a very important part of my journey for the healing process having been adopted out as a baby, and segregated from my people and my Culture and Country for over 50 years. It just goes to show that our Culture is within us forever. I am now an Aboriginal Night Patroller for the Larrakia Nation Corporation. I work with the old people, the children and people with substance abuse issues, and this allows me to help my fellow Countrymen.
