One year after a person passes away, they call all the tribes. In the past we passed a purinijiti (letter stick) from camp to camp to say there will be a big ceremony. The men carve and then paint Pukumani Poles to represent our loved ones who passed, and place them around their grave. We traditionally used bloodwood or eucalyptus and would leave them to naturally break down and decay.
