Two dog ancestors, a Jampijinpa and a Napangardi, travelled from the west to the east. They dug holes in the ground and created warnirri (rockholes) and ngapa (waterholes) as they went. The two dogs separated. Eventually Jampijinpa became lonely and howled for Napangardi in the south. She came running to him, and they married each other at Ngarnka.

This beautiful set is part of Ashdene’s 2023 Ikuntji Collection.

Rosie has depicted kurlkura trees in her country, Warlukurlangu, south of Yuendumu. The trees are shown in flower. The country offers a big water soakage (Ngapa) and is a place of rest for Nampijinpa/Jampijinpa/Nangala/Jangala skin groups.

Andrea tells us about the seven sisters and their travels through the country as they are pursued by Wati (Man) Nyiru. Nyiru fell in love with the sisters, and even though they were of the wrong skin name, he was desperate to make them his. As the women fled from Wati Nyiru they created the country and landscape around Andrea’s home, Mala.

Gabriel has depicted Mimih spirits in this dynamic design. According to the Kunwinjku people of western Arnhem Land, Mimih spirits were the original spirit beings, who taught Aboriginal people many of the skills they needed to survive in the bush. They also taught aspects of ceremony.Mimih spirits are believed to inhabit the rocky escarpments around Gunbalanya but because they are e xtremely timid, they are rarely seen by humans. They are frequently depicted in the rock art of Arnhem Land as small, dynamic figures, often shown with a range of hunting tools such as spears, spear throwers, dilly bags and fire sticks.
