In the remote Tiwi Islands, a 20-strong group of female Elders have been meeting to sing for decades.

Their mission: to compose and perform songs that hold cultural, genealogical, geographical and spiritual knowledge that has been passed down through thousands of years of Tiwi storytelling, ceremony and in the songlines that circle the islands.

Their goal: to preserve and pass these song stories to their children, grandchildren and future generations.

The Ngarukuruwala Women’s Group from the Tiwi Islands have been sisters and friends all their lives. As young women they composed songs and as Elders and mentors in their Community, they draw on the old ways of Tiwi song traditions to help young Tiwi people connect with their language and cultural identity, also creating new songs.

Murli La is a joint project between the ILF and Hardie Grant and the book is written by the Ngarukuruwala Women’s Group in partnership with Dr Genevieve Campbell. The ILF is extremely grateful for Dr Campbell’s knowledge and assistance in producing the book.

Tiwi Textiles tells the story of the innovative Tiwi Design centre on Bathurst Island in northern Australia, dedicated to the production of hand-printed fabrics featuring Indigenous designs, from the 1970s to today. Written by early art coordinator Diana Wood Conroy with oral testimony from senior Tiwi artist Bede Tungutalum, who established Tiwi Design in 1969 with fellow designer Giovanni Tipungwuti, the book traces the beginnings of the centre, and its subsequent place in the Tiwi community and Australian Indigenous culture more broadly.

Delving Deep Into The Australian Landscape And Its Alarming State Of Devastation, Fire Country Is A Powerful Account From Indigenous Land Management Expert Victor Steffensen On How The Revival Of Indigenous Fire Practices, Including What’s Called ‘cool Burns’, Could Restore Our Country. Fire Country Offers Practical Solutions For Better ‘reading Country’ And Knowing When Is The Right Time To Undertake Cool Burns, Considering Current Climate Conditions And Each Landscape’s Specific Ecosystem. From The Age Of 18, Victor Has Spent Time On Country Learning Traditional Cultural And Ecological Knowledge From Elders. Having Been Developed Over Many Generations Of His People Living On The Land, This Knowledge Shows Clearly That Australia Actually Needs Fire – With Burning Done In A Controlled Manner – For Land Care And Healing. Victor’s Writing Is Unassuming And Honest, Written In A Manner That Reflects The Nature Of Yarning. And While Much Of The Knowledge Shared In His Book Is Still Unknown To Western Science, There Is Much Evidence That, If Adopted, It Will Benefit All Australians.

ONGLISTED FOR THE ABIA ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE YEAR 2020 “The Macquarie Atlas of Indigenous Australia has a place on the work table of every Australian student, on the coffee table of every Australian home and on the desk of every Australian political representative.” SENATOR PATRICK DODSON The Macquarie Atlas of Indigenous Australia is a unique tool for exploring and understanding the lives and cultures of Australia’s First Peoples. This second edition of the award-winning Macquarie Atlas of Indigenous Australia opens a window onto the landscape of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lives, from over 60,000 years ago to the present time. An atlas visually represents patterns of human activities in space and time. The maps, which form the core of the book, are supplemented by explanatory text and numerous diagrams, photographs and illustrations, including Indigenous artworks. Each chapter has been extensively revised and updated by one or more experts in their field, under the general editorship of Bill Arthur and Frances Morphy of the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research at the Australian National University. This book is a collaborative publication between the Australian National University (ANU), the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Macquarie Dictionary.

Most of us tend to associate Australia with the one type of boomerang – the returning variety. It is generally accepted that the returning type was a later addition to boomerangs. Origins of the throwing stick are known in Egypt and parts of South America, but it was the Australian Aborigine who created a wide variety of boomerangs that had different applications, thus providing the greatest diversity. The earliest known evidence has been found at Wyrie Swamp in South Australia dating back to c.10,000 years. This has been scientifically proven by radiocarbon dating. As you read through this book you will begin to appreciate that the boomerang is more than just a toy.

Ubirr and Nourlangie are two outstanding rock outliers adorned with Aboriginal Paintings, lying on plains beside the East Alligator River and the Arnhem Land Escarpment in Kakadu National Park in northern Australia.

Dreaming paths of the Rainbow Serpent, the Lightning Man, the Cockatoo Lady, and Warramurrunundji the Earth Mother all pass through the region and are important Ancestral Beings for local Aboriginal people.

For thousands of years Aborigines recorded important ceremonies, deities and totemic plants and animals by painting their images in the rock shelters, cliffs and overhangs of the region. Artistic styles have evolved over time, from naturalistic forms to the intellectual X-ray style, where the internal anatomy of the subject is portrayed.

Aboriginal Paintings at Ubirr and Nourlangie provides a guide to the art sites, many open to the public, explaining their significance for Aboriginal people, both past and present.
