The site depicted in this painting is Puyurru, west ofYuendumu. In the usually dry creek bed are watersoakages or naturally occurring wells. Two Jangala men, rainmakers, sang the rain, unleashing a giant storm. Ittravelled across the country, lightning striking the land. This storm met up with another storm from Wapurtali, tothe west. It was picked up by a bird (Kilkilanji, a whistlingkite) and carried further west until the load became tooheavy for it to bear and it dropped that storm atPurlungyanu, where it created a giant soakage. AtPuyurru the bird dug up a giant snake, Wanayarra, thesnake carried water with it that created a giant lake,Jillyiumpa. There is an outstation there belonging toShorty’s family. In this painting Shorty has used curvylines or straight lines to represent the ngawarra (floodwaters) running through the landscape, the small circlesare mulju (water soakage), and the bars joining the longlines represent mangkurdu (clouds).
